September 24, 2002 Devils Defeat Rangers 2-1 in OT
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Rangers in New
York 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday, September 24, 2002.
Many regulars were in the lineups for both teams, including
ex-Devil Bobby Holik.
There was not much action in the first period. Both
teams seemed to be taking things cautiously, not taking many chances.
The first period ended with no scoring. The Rangers
outshot the Devils 8-6 in the period.
There was a little more action in the second period --
the hitting (and penalties) picked up quite a bit. There was a
long period of time, when it was all special teams.
The second period ended with the game still tied, 0-0.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 8-7 in the second.
Patrik Elias scored at 6:15 of the third period to break
the scoreless tie. Elias beat Holik on a faceoff in the Rangers
end, two passes later got the puck back and put it past
Blackburn. Elias's second goal of the pre-season was assisted by
Andrei Zyuzin and Brian Gionta.
Ex-Devil defenseman, Vladimir Malakhov tied the game on a
Ranger power-play at 15:59 of the third period.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 1-1.
Brian Rafalski took a nice pass from Stephen Guolla and
pushed the puck past Blackburn 1:40 into the overtime. Brian
Gionta also assisted on Rafalski's first goal of the pre-season.
Notes: Scott Niedermayer and Turner Stevenson wore "A"s
for the Devils. Announced attendance for the game was 14,757.
MSG has netting in place.
