Madden Shines, Devils Defeat Senators 2-1
The New Jersey Devils opened their season on the road, skating against the Senators at the Corel Centre in Ottawa, on Thursday, October 10, 2002.   The Devils defeated the Senators 2-1, with both Devils goals coming from John Madden.
Through the first half of the first period, the game was very fast-paced.   The Senators had a power-play opportunity and had the Devils penalty-killers stuck out for the entire penalty, but the squad managed to kill it off.
The Devils had a power-play chance at 11:21 of the first, but the Senators managed better chances, short-handed.
The first period ended with the game scoreless, 0-0.   The Devils outshot the Senators 10-9 in the period.
The second period began with teams skating 4 a side, as Daniel Alfredsson took a slashing penalty and Colin White took a roughing minor, at the 20:00 mark of the first period.
Johh Madden put the puck past Patrick Lalime - and through the net at 2:04 of the second period.   Play continued, but at the next stoppage, the play was reviewed and the net had to be repaired, as Madden's first goal of the season ripped right through it!   Brian Gionta and Scott Stevens got assists on the Devils first goal of the regular season.
John Madden scored short-handed with a quick snap shot with just 1:21 left in the second.   Madden's second goal of the game was unassisted.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Senators, 2-0.   The Senators outshot the Devils 13-6 in the period.
Brodeur's shutout chance was ruined with 1:46 remaining in the third, when Daniel Alfredsson deflected the puck past him.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Senators, 2-1.   The Senators outshot the Devils 34-20 in the game.   Each team was 0 for 5 on the power-play.
Brodeur made 33 saves on 34 shots.
Scott Niedermayer and Patrik Elias wore "A"s for the Devils.   When Elias was told a few hours before the game that he would wear an "A", he said, "Good!"
Stephen Guolla, Andreas Salomonsson, and Andrei Zyuzin were healthy scratches for the Devils.
Announced Attendance for the game was 16,865.
