December 21, 2002 Game 31: Devils Defeat Stars, 5-3 - Langenbrunner Shines
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Dallas Stars, 5-3 in New
Jersey on Saturday, December 21, 2002.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored on his former team at 5:21 of the
first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Langenbrunner's 9th goal of
the season was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott Stevens.
The Devils had 1:22 of 5 on 3 power-play time shortly after the
Langenbrunner goal, but were unable to capitalize.
Oleg Tverdovsky gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 12:22 of the first
period, beating Marty Turco with a nice shot. Jamie Langenbrunner and
Ken Daneyko assisted on Tverdovsky's 4th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Stars, 2-0.
The Devils outshot the Stars, 11-6 in the period.
Manny Malhotra cut the Devils lead in half 1:12 into the second
period, buy sneaking the puck past Brodeur's left leg.
Ex-Devil, Bill Guerin tied the game, 2-2 at 10:14 of the second
period, beating Brodeur after Colin White's stick was chopped in half by a
Dallas Star player.
Jeff Friesen regained the lead for the Devils by stashing the
puck into an empty net just 66 seconds after Guerin's goal. Turco had
left the net to play the puck, but gave it away to Patrik Elias. Elias
got the only assist on Friesen's 7th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Stars, 3-2.
The Devils outshot the Stars 12-8 in the period.
Madden made a nice backhand shot from a Rafalski rebound at 5:56
of the third period to give the Devils a 4-2 lead. Rafalski had the only
assist on Madden's 8th goal of the season.
The Devils were on a penalty kill after a questionable penalty
called on Oleg Tverdovsky. Scott Stevens was knocked down to the ice in
front of his own net - no where near the puck, but no interference call - just
2 seconds later, the Stars score.
After Guerin's goal at 14:37, John Madden complained about the
non-call and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. With that
bad call, the Stars got consecutive power plays. The Devils were able
to kill off the second penalty.
John Madden, fired up after being sent to the box, beat Marty
Turco at 18:07 to give the Devils a 5-3 lead. Jamie Langenbrunner and
Scott Stevens got assists on Madden's 9th goal of the season, and second of the
game.

game.
Jamie Langenbrunner (with a goal and two assists) was the first
star of the game, with John Madden (two goals) and Brian Rafalski (two assists)
getting the second and third stars.
The game marked the first return of Jason Arnott to the
Continental Airlines Arena since being traded to Dallas on March 19,
2002. It was also the first time that Jamie Langenbrunner and Joe
Nieuwendyk (from that same trade) played against their former team.
The Stars were without the services of star center, Mike Modano.
Modano was placed on Injured Reserve on Friday, because he was suffering
from post-concussion syndrome.
It was Devils Trading Card day at CAA, all fans in attendance
received a package of Devils promotional Trading Cards.
Christian Berglund and Tommy Albelin were healthy scratches for
the Devils.
