December 27, 2002 Game 33: Devils Fall to Caps, 3-2, Late Rally Not Enough
The New Jersey Devils were defeated, 3-2 in Washington by the
Capitals on Friday, December 27, 2002.
Here are a few of MY PICTURES
FROM THE GAME.
With just 7.7 seconds left in a good first period for the Devils,
Steve Konowalchuk beat Brodeur to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with the Capitals leading, 1-0 but outshot
by the Devils, 8-5.
The Capitals got goals 53 seconds apart (at 16:36 and 17:29) from
Peter Bondra and Jaromir Jagr to give the Capitals a 3-0 lead after two
periods. The Devils outshot the Caps 12-9 in the second period.
The Devils rallied in the third period, breaking their 13-game
drought of no goals on the power-play.
Jamie Langenbrunner wrecked Olaf Kolzig's hopes of a shutout just
1:07 into the third period, on the power-play. Langenbrunner's 10th goal
of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski.
Sergei Brylin recorded his 8th goal of the season at 13:12 on the
power-play. Brylin's goal was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Patrik
Elias.
Joe Nieuwendyk had a glorious chance to tie the game with only
3:12 remaining, but Kolzig was able to get his glove on the puck.
The late rally was not enough - the game ended with the Capitals
winning, 3-2. The Devils outshot the Caps 11-3 in the third period and
31-17 in the game.
The game was the first half of a back-to-back home-and-home
series, with the second half to be played on Saturday at Continental Airlines
Arena at 8:00PM.
Oleg Tverdovsky (flu) and Christian Berglund (healthy) were the Devils
scratches.
I will be attending both games, so updates to the site will be
delayed.
