January 03, 2003Game 37: Devils Beat Leafs, 2-0 - Schwab Gets Egg
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-0 in
New Jersey on Friday, January 3, 2003. Corey Schwab recorded his first
shutout as a Devil, the 5th of his career.
The first period was scoreless, but the Maple Leafs took the
first penalty of the game with just 18 seconds left in the period. The
Devils outshot the Maple Leafs, 9-4 in the period.
The Devils began the second period with 1:42 of carry-over
power-play time, but were unable to convert with the man advantage.
Jiri Bicek broke the scoreless deadlock 8:59 into the second
period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Bicek's 1st goal of the season was
top-shelf - a nice feed from Patrik Elias. Brian Rafalski also assisted
on the goal.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Leafs, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Leafs, 11-7 in the period.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 2-0 lead with just 1:29 left in
the game to seal the win for the Devils. Elias's 8th goal of the season
was assisted by Scott Gomez.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 2-0. The Leafs
outshot the Devils 6-5 in the third period, but were outshot 25-17 in the
