January 04, 2003 Game 38: Leafs Beat Devils, 2-1
The New Jersey Devils were defeated 2-1, in Toronto by the Maple
Leafs on Saturday, January 4, 2003. The Devils poured on the shots,
Eddie Belfour had to make 50 saves to keep the Leafs alive.
The Devils were playing very well in the first, but Tom
Fitzgerald wrecked that by beating Brodeur with just 1:11 remaining.
The first period came to an end with the Leafs leading the Devils,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Leafs, 17-7 in the period.
Jamie Langenbrunner tied the game at 14:39 of the second period
by beating Belfour on the power-play. Langenbrunner's 11th goal of the
season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski.
The second period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The
Devils outshot the Leafs, 21-6 in the period.
Travis Green gave the Leafs a 2-1 lead at 3:29 of the third
period, on the power-play..
The Devils were unable to tie it up, the game ended with the
Leafs winning, 2-1. The Devils outshot the Maple Leafs 13-6 in the third,
and 51-19 in the game.
Brian Gionta was rested after blocking a shot on Friday, so
Christian Berglund was in the lineup in his place. Oleg Tverdovsky
(undisclosed illness) was also a scratch for the Devils.
The game was the second half of a back-to-back home-and-home
series - the first game was played in New Jersey on Friday.
