January 07, 2003Game 39: Devils & Joe Rally, Beat Canadiens, 3-2
The New Jersey Devils rallied after trailing 2-1 at home to the
Montreal Canadiens after two periods. Joe Nieuwendyk scored two goals in
the third to win the game 3-2.
The Canadiens had an apparent goal disallowed early in the first
period after Kerry Fraser ruled that the Hab player made contact with Martin
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead 8:06 into the first
period by putting the puck past Jeff Hackett. Jiri Bicek and Sergei
Brylin assisted on Elias's 9th goal of the season.
Colin White left in the first period, with a charley horse, and
did not return.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Habs, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Canadiens, 13-7 in the period.
Jay Pandolfo nearly blocked a shot from Stephane Quintal, but the
puck got past him and Brodeur at 8:41 of the second period.
Marcel Hossa gave the Habs their first lead of the game at 16:34
of the second period.
The second period ended with the Canadiens leading the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Habs, 14-10 in the period.
Joe Nieuwendyk tied the game at 6:36 of the third period, from a
great feed from Christian Berglund. Jamie Langenbrunner also assisted on
Nieuwendyk's 4th goal of the season.
Joe Nieuwendyk got his second goal of the game 3:13 later, to
give the Devils a 3-2 lead. Nieuwendyk's 5th goal of the season was
assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and Jeff Friesen.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 3-2. The Devils
outshot the Canadiens, 9-5 in the third period and 36-22 in the game.
It was the Devils annual coat drive, fans attending the game were
asked to bring coats to help the less fortunate. All fans in attendance
who made donations were eligible to win autographed Devils memorabilia.
