Game 44: Devils Beat Hurricanes: 2-1 - Joe nets 500!!

The New Jersey Devils defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh on Friday, January 17, 2003.

Joe Nieuwendyk scored his 500th career NHL goal at 11:18 of the first period, by drawing Kevin Weekes out of the net, and slipping the puck into the empty net.   Nieuwendyk's 6th goal of the season was unassisted.

The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes, 1-0.   The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 13-5 in the period.

Jamie Langenbrunner shot the puck over Weekes with just 15 seconds left in the second period.   Langenbrunner's 13th goal of the season was assisted by Jeff Friesen.

The second period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes, 2-0.   The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 20-9 in the period.

Jeff Heerema cut the Devils lead to one goal at 9:03 of the third period.

The game ended with the Devils winning, 2-1.   The Canes outshot the Devils 9-5 in the third period and 35-27 in the game.

The Devils were forced to play with one less than the allowed number of players in the lineup - having only 3 full forward lines.   Oleg Tverdovsky and Patrik Elias were unexpectedly unable to play in Raleigh.   Tverdovsky returned to New Jersey, after falling ill again and Elias had to sit out with a sore back.

The game was the first half of a back-to-back home-and-home series, with the second half to be played in New Jersey on Saturday.

The Hurricanes lead the season series, 2-1-0-0, but the Devils lead the lifetime series, 35-29-9-0.

Joe Nieuwendyk became only the 32nd player to ever record 500 career NHL goals.   The Devils bench cleared to congratulate him on the ice, as his milestone was announced in the arena.

With Devils Alternate Captain, Patrik Elias out of the lineup, Joe Nieuwendyk wore an "A".

Devils assistant coach, John MacLean, was behind the bench for the first time, because Bobby Carpenter was back in New Jersey with his sick son.
