The Penguins got goals from Nieminen and Surovy at 6:02 and 9:11 of the first period.

Jim McKenzie tried to get the Devils fired up by fighting Penguins big guy Steve McKenna after the Surovy goal.

The fight did not have the desired effect as Samuelsson was able to beat Brodeur just 1:28 later at 10:41.   Lemieux added a power-play goal at 17:04 to add to the Penguins 4-0 first period rout of the Devils.

The first period ended with the Penguins leading the Devils, 4-0.   Pittsgurgh outshot the Devils 11-8 in the period.

Corey Schwab replaced Martin Brodeur for the start of the second period to mind the Devils net.
