February 27, 2003Game 63: Devils & Islanders Skate to 3-3 Tie
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 3-3 tie against the Islanders
on Long Island on Thursday, February 27, 2003.
Brad Isbister beat Brodeur just 3:55 into the first period to
give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead. Dave Scatchard put another puck in
the net just 3:38 later on the power-play, to make it a 2-0 lead.
Scott Gomez made it a 1 goal game by putting the puck past Rick
DiPietro at 11:27 of the first period. Brian Gionta and Ray Giroux
assisted on Gomez's 10th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Islanders leading the Devils,
2-1. The Islanders outshot the Devils 13-10 in the period.
Jeff Friesen tied the game just 5:40 into the second period.
His 19th goal of the season was assisted by Joe Nieuwendyk and Jamie
John Madden beat DiPietro at 10:33 to give the Devils their first
lead of the game. Madden's 16th goal of the season was assisted by Jay
Pandolfo and Patrik Elias.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders,
3-2. The Devils outshot the Islanders 8-4 in the period.
Shawn Bates tied the game at 11:14 of the third period.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3. The Devils
outshot the Islanders 11-3 in the third period.
Mike Rupp took a bad holding penalty 3:22 into the overtime
period. Though the Islanders had a 4-3 advantage, the Devils had a
number of glorious chances to win the game shorthanded. Jamie
Langenbrunner actually beat DiPietro about .3 seconds after the horn
The goal did not count, the game ended with the game tied,
3-3. The Devils outshot the Islanders 33-22 in the game.
