March 17, 2003 Game 71: Flyers Beat Devils: 4-2
The New Jersey Devils were defeate, 4-2, at home by the
Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, March 17, 2003.
Sami Kapanen beat Brodeur at 3:57 of the first period to give the
Flyers an early 1-0 lead.
Eric Desjardins was credited with a goal that deflected off the
skate of Devils defenseman, Richard Smehlik at 15:13 of the first
period.
The first period ended with the Flyers leading the Devils, 2-0.
The Flyers outshot the Devils, 10-9 in the period.
Jim McKenzie deflected a Scott Stevens shot past Roman Cechmanek
at 2:49 of the second period to cut the Flyers lead. McKenzie's 3rd goal
of the season was also assisted by Turner Stevenson.
Tony Amonte blasted the puck past Brodeur at 4:22 to regain the
Flyers 2 goal lead. Eric Weinrich made the best of a 2 on 1 shorthanded
breakout - to beat Brodeur at 10:10 of the second period.
The second period ended with the Devils trailing the Flyers,
4-1. The Devils outshot the Flyers, 14-5 in the period.
Patrik Elias beat Cechmanek just 2:46 into the third period to
cut the Flyers lead to 2 goals. Scott Gomez and Grant Marshall assisted
on Elias's 21st goal of the season.
The game ended with the Flyers defeating the Devils, 4-2.
The Devils outshot the Flyers 6-5 in the third period and 29-20 in the
game.
