December 16, 2003Game 29: Devils Fall 5-4 to Islanders
The New Jersey Devils were defeated 5-4 by the Islanders in New
York, on Tuesday, December 16, 2003.
Mike Rupp beat Garth Snow just 5:52 into the first period to give
the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Rupp's fourth goal of the season was
assisted by Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez.
Rupp scored again just 2:49 later to increase the Devils lead to
2 goals. Rupp's second goal of the game was assisted by Brian Rafalski
and Grant Marshall.
Michael Peca deflected the puck past Martin Brodeur at 12:46 to
end Brodeur's 200+ minute shutout streak over the Islanders.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders,
2-1. New York outshot New Jersey 7-5 in the period.
Kenny Jonsson beat Brodeur just 23 seconds into the second
period, 6 seconds after a Devils penalty expired to tie the game, 2-2.
John Madden got away on a breakaway and beat Snow unassisted at
4:43 of the second period. Madden's fifth goal of the season regained
the lead for the Devils.
Trent Hunter got the puck past Brodeur at 9:37 of the second, on
the power-play even the score again.
The second period ended with the game tied, 3-3. The
Islanders outshot the Devils 14-13 in the period.
Jason Blake beat Martin Brodeur short-handed at 13:55 of the
third period to give the Islanders a 4-3 lead. Video replay clearly
showed that the play was off-side and the goal should not have counted.
Just 17 seconds after Blake's goal, Sergei Brylin won a faceoff,
drove to the net and put a rebound past Snow to tie the game, 4-4. Colin
White assisted on Brylin's fourth goal of the season.
After only 13 more seconds past, Alexei Yashin beat Brodeur to
make it a 5-4 Islanders lead.
The game ended with the Islanders defeating the Devils, 5-4.
The Devils outshot the Islanders 15-7 in the third period, and 33-28 in
