January 09, 2004Game 40: Devils Honor Daneyko, Then Embarrass Selves
The New Jersey Devils were embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Lightning,
Losing 4-1 at home on Friday, January 9, 2004.
Here are a few of my
pictures from the game.
Scott Gomez beat Lightning netminder John Grahame just 1:28 into
the first period to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Gomez's fifth
goal of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski.
Just as Bob Arsena was announcing 1:00 remaining in the first
period, Martin St. Louis put the puck past Martin Brodeur with a short-handed
goal to tie the game.
The first period ended with the teams tied, 1-1. Tampa Bay
outshot the Devils 15-10 in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period which was delayed for
quite some time due to a power outage. The Lightning again outshot the
Devils, in the second period by a margin of 9-5.
Cory Stillman made it a 2-1 Lightning lead with a goal just 1:22
into the third period. Dave Andreychuk beat Brodeur at 6:38 and Fredrik
Modin scored off the following faceoff, just 9 seconds later to make it a 4-1
There was no more scoring in the third period, the game ended
with the Lightning defeating the Devils, 4-1. Tampa Bay outshot New
Jersey 13-4 in the third period and 37-19 in the game.
The Devils were 0-4 on the power-play. Tampa was 0-2 with
the man advantage - though they did score a shorthanded goal.
The Devils now trail the Lightning 0-2 in the season series.
The teams will meet two more times before the end of the season.
The Devils honored long-time Devils' defenseman Ken Daneyko
prior to the game. All fans in attendance received a Ken Daneyko bobble
Scott Stevens and Mike Rupp were not in the lineup - Paul Martin
and Rob Skrlac took their place. Scott Niedermayer wore the 'C' and John
Madden wore an 'A'.
