January 27, 2004 Game 49: Devils Beat Blue Jackets: 4-3
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Blue Jackets, 4-3 in Columbus,
now on Tuesday, January 27, 2004.
Grant Marshall beat Marc Denis on the power-play at 11:02 of the
first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Marshall's sixth goal of the
season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski.
Patrik Elias beat Denis with a great move short-handed at 12:18
of the first. Elias skated past him, dragging him out of his net, then
skated back in front and put a nice backhand shot in the net. Elias'
18th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Niedermayer.
Sergei Brylin gave the Devils a commanding 3-0 lead with a goal
at 14:10. Turner Stevenson and Sean Brown assisted on Brylin's ninth
goal of the season.
With Rob Skrlac out of the Devils lineup (healthy scratch), Jody
Shelley invited Sean Brown to dance shortly after Brylin's goal. Brown
accepted, the two scrapped, and earned their 5 minute fighting majors.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Blue Jackets,
3-0. The Devils outshot Columbus 17-10 in the period.
Rick Nash lifted a rebound over Martin Brodeur at 4:29 of the
second period on the power-play to cut the Devils lead to two goals.
The second period came to a close with the Devils leading
Columbus, 3-1. Each team had 11 shots in the period.
Tyler Wright beat Brodeur with just 2:19 left in the third period
