February 21, 2004Game 60: Devils Smash Rangers 7-3: Gomez Gets 5pts!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Rangers 7-3 in New York on
Saturday, February 21, 2004. Scott Gomez, Patrik Elias, and Brian Gionta
combined for 11 points.
Scott Gomez got the Devils on the board early, scoring on Mike
Dunham with a bad angle shot at 2:31 of the first period. Patrik Elias
and Brian Gionta assisted on Gomez's seventh goal of the season.
Jay Pandolfo sent the puck right through the crease and Turner
Stevenson slapped it past Dunham at 5:58 to make it a 2-0 Devils lead.
John Madden also asssited on Stevenson's eighth goal of the season.
Martin Rucinsky cut the Devils lead in half with a slap shot that
beat Brodeur at 10:53 of the first period.
Scott Gomez took a rebound and lifted it over the sprawling
Dunham at 13:26 to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Gomez's second goal of
the game was assisted on by Patrik Elias and David Hale.
Grant Marshall deflected the puck past Mike Dunham at 15:45 on the
power-play to increase the Devils lead to 3 goals. Scott Gomez recorded
the only assist on Marshall's seventh goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils dominating the Rangers,
4-1 on the scoreboard and outshooting them 15-10
Patrik Elias backhanded the puck past Dunham at 2:37 of the
second period to make it a 5-1 Devils lead. Scott Gomez - with his
fourth point of the game - got the only assist on Elias' 22nd goal of the
Jaromir Jagr blasted the puck past Brodeur at 5:56 of the second
period to cut the Devils lead to 3 goals.
Brian Gionta beat Jussi Markkanen (who was brought in after the
Devils 5th goal) just 1:14 after Jagr's goal to give the Devils a 6-2 lead.
Gionta's 15th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez
The second period came to a close with the Devils leading the
Rangers, 6-2. The Rangers outshot the Devils 11-7 in the period.
Bobby Holik beat Martin Brodeur just 1:25 into the third period
to cut the Devils lead to a mere 3 goals.
