Game 61: Devils Put Out Flames 3-1

The New Jersey Devils defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 at home on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - despite bad officiating.

Here are a few of my pictures from the game.

Patrik Elias beat Mikka Kiprusoff 4:48 into the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.   Elias' 24th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and Scott Gomez.

Ex-Devil Krysztof Oliwa fought Grant Marshall a little under a minute later.   Though Oliwa had quite a size advantage (6'5" 245lbs vs 6'1" 195lbs), Marshall held his own - each landed a few good punches.

The first period ended with the Devils leading the Flames, 1-0.   New Jersey outshot Calgary 13-5 in the period.

5:09 into the second period, Chuck Kobasew beat Martin Brodeur, on a power-play to tie the game, 1-1.

Patrik Elias was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the goal was scored, forcing the Devils to be shorthanded again.

Colin White was assessed a 5 minute major penalty (and a game misconduct) for cross checking at 9:25.   White cross-checked Denis Gauthier in the head after Gauthier had crushed Jay Pandolfo headfirst into the boards.

The Devils not only killed the penalty, but were outstanding shorthanded.   The did not allow a single shot on Brodeur - and had several scoring opportunies while Calgary had the man advantage.

Patrik Elias beat Kiprusoff for his second goal of the game at 16:06 of the second period.   Elias' goal was assisted by Scott Gomez and Jamie Langenbrunner.

The second period ended with the Devils leading the Flames, 2-1.   The Devils outshot the Flames, 9-8 in the period.

Turner Stevenson added an empty net goal with 14 seconds remaining in regulation time to seal the win for the Devils.   Jay Pandolfo and Scott Niedermayer assisted on Stevenson's ninth goal of the season.

The Flames outshot the Devils 6-4 in the third period, but were outshot 26-19 in the game.

The game was the only regular season matchup between the teams in 2003-2004.
