March 05, 2004 Game 67: Lightning Beat Devils 3-2 in Overtime
The New Jersey Devils lost to the Lightning in Tampa Bay, 3-2 in
overtime on Friday, March 5, 2004. The Devils had a 2-1 lead, but blew
it with just 9.6 remaining in regulation time.
Dimitry Afanasenkov took a bouncing puck and slapped it past
Brodeur at 9:30 of the first period to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.
At the end of the first period, the Devils led the Lightning 8-4
in shots, but trailed 0-1 in goals.
John Madden finally buried a puck - after 74 shots without a
goal. Madden's eighth goal of the season beat Nikolai Khabibulin at
1:20 of the second period and was assisted by Brian Rafalski.
Jeff Friesen beat Khabibulin at 13:56 of the second period to
give the Devils their first lead of the game. Friesen's 15th goal of the
season was assisted by Erik Rasmussen and Scott Gomez.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Lightning,
2-1. The Devils outshot Tampa, 15-6 in the period.
With just 9.6 seconds remaining in regulation time, Vincent
Lecavilier beat Martin Brodeur to force overtime. The goal came with
the Tampa net empty and the Lightning skating with an extra attacker.
The Lightning outshot the Devils 10-7 in the third period.
Ex-Devil Dave Andreychuk beat Brodeur 2:17 into the overtime
period to win the game for the Lightning. The Devils outshot the
Lightning 32-22 in the game.
Brian Gionta was struck with the puck in the face (from a Paul
Martin shot) early in the second period - and did not return to the
game.
The Lightning now lead the season series, 3-0. The teams
will meet once more (on March 25) before the playoffs begin.
The game was the fourth of a 5-game road trip, the Devils head to
Carolina next before heading home for a game against the Flyers on the trade
deadline (March 9).
