March 06, 2004 Game 68: Devils Beat Hurricanes: 4-1, Elias Nets 200
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Hurricanes, 4-1 in Raleigh,
North Carolina on Saturday, March 6, 2004. The Devils finished their 5
game road trip with 5 of 10 possible points.
John Madden had lots of time in the slot, took it, and chose his
corner to beat Kevin Weekes at 3:18 of the first period. Paul Martin and
Jay Pandolfo assisted on Madden's ninth goal of the season.
Brian Rafalski beat Weekes on the power-play at 9:55 to give
the Devils a 2-0 lead. Sergei Brylin and Paul Martin assisted on
Rafalski's sixth goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes
2-0. The shots were even, 8-8, in the period.
Patrik Elias made it a 3-0 lead with his 200th career goal (31st
of the season) at 8:27 of the second period. Scott Gomez assisted on the
goal.
Erik Cole took a bouncing puck in the final seconds of the second
period, and put it over Martin Brodeur to cut the Devils lead to two
goals.
The second period came to a close with the Devils leading the
Canes, 3-1. The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 12-7 in the period.
Jamie Langenbrunner pushed Weekes and the puck into the Canes net
at 1:10 of the third period to give New Jersey a 4-1 lead.
Langenbrunner's ninth goal of the season was assisted by John Madden.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Hurricanes, 4-1.
The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 6-5 in the third period and 26-20 in
the game.
Jan Hrdina won 9 of 13 faceoffs (69%) in his Devils debut.
The game was the 600th of Turner Stevenson's NHL career.
The Devils won the season series, 3-1.
The game was the last of a 5-game road trip. The Devils
next play at home against the Flyers on the trade deadline (March 9).
