March 28, 2004Game 79: Devils Beat Islanders, 3-2
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 at home
on Sunday, March 28, 2004.
Here are a few of my pictures
from the game.
Scott Niedermayer took a rebound and beat Rick DiPietro 6:26 into
the first period to Give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Scott Gomez and Patrik
Elias assisted on Niedermayer's 13th goal of the season.
Grant Marshall squared off with Eric Cairns nearly half-way
through the first period. Cairns won the fight, and Grant Marshall had
to leave the game to have X-Rays taken on his hand.
Dave Scatchard beat Martin Brodeur shorthanded with just 39
seconds remaining in the first period to tie the game.
The Devils outshot the Islanders 10-3, but the score was tied 1-1
at the end of the first period.
Patrik Elias beat DiPietro at 5:13 of the second period.
Elias' 37th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Sergei
Brian Gionta deflected a shot from Scott Gomez past DiPietro with
just 2:07 remaining in the second period to increase the Devils lead to two
goals. Patrik Elias also assisted on Gionta's 21st goal of the
Jeff Friesen left the ice late in the second period with what was
being reported as a nerve injury. He did not return for the third
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders,
3-1. The Devils outshot the Islanders 9-7 in the period.
Mark Parrish beat Brodeur just 43 seconds into the third period
to give the Islanders hope - but they would not score again.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 3-2. The Devils
outshot the Islanders 9-4 in the third period and 28-14 in the game.
Scott Gomez's assist on Scott Niedermayer's first period goal was
the 300th point of his NHL career.
The Devils victory meant that the teams finish the season series
tied, 3-3. (The game was their last regular season matchup).
