The New Jersey Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 at home
on Thursday, January 5, 2006. Patrik Elias led the team with a 4 point
game (2 goals and 2 assists).
11 seconds into the first period, Saku Koivu beat Martin Brodeur
to give the Canadiens an early 1-0 lead.
Patrik Elias beat Jose Theodore 52 seconds after Koivu's goal to
tie the game, 1-1. Elias' first goal of the season was assisted by
Viktor Kozlov made it a 2-1 Devils lead, beating Theodore at
14:15. Kozlov's ninth goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez
and Zach Parise.
Scott Gomez beat Theodore on a power-play at 15:55 to increase
the Devils lead. Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski assisted on Gomez's
15th goal of the season.

The Devils outshot the Habs 13-6 in the first period, which ended
with the Devils leading, 3-2.
Patrik Elias ripped the puck past Theodore at 7:44 of the second
period to give the Devils a 4-2 lead. Elias' second goal of the game was
assisted by Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta.
Elias set Brian Rafalski up perfectly, and he beat Theodore at
10:05 to make it a 5-2 Devils lead. Richard Matvichuk also assisted on
Rafalski's fourth goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Habs, 5-2.
The Devils outshot the Canadiens, 9-4 in the period.
Michael Ryder beat Martin Brodeur at 4:07 of the third period to
cut the Devils lead to 2 goals. Andrei Kastsitsyn put another one in
1:40 later to make it a 1 goal game.
There was no additional scoring - the Devils defeated the Habs,
5-4. The Canadiens outshot the Devils 10-5 in the third period, but were
outshot 27-20 in the game.
