March 13, 2008Game 71: Devils Beat Wild: 4-3 (Shootout)
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Wild 4-3 in Minnesota in a
shootout on Thursday, March 13, 2008.
Stephane Veilleux beat Martin Brodeur just 3:26 into the first
period to give the Wild a 1-0 lead. Brent Burns made it a 2 goal lead
for Minnesota with a goal at 12:58.
The shots were even, 11-11 in the first 20 minutes, but the Wild
led 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Vitaly Vishnevski got the Devils on the board with a goal that
beat Niklas Backstrom at 5:43 of the second period. Dainius Zubrus was
credited with the only assist on Vishnevski's second goal of the season.
Brian Gionta tied the game with a goal at 13:46. Gionta's
20th goal of the season was assisted by Jay Pandolfo and John Madden.
With just 14 seconds remaining in the second period, Marion
Gaborik took the wind out of the Devils sails with a goal to give the lead back
The shots were again even in the second period, this time 9-9,
but the Wild led 3-2 at the end of the period.
Dainius Zubrus tied the game with a goal at 5:41 of the third
period. David Clarkson and Mike Rupp assisted on Zubrus' 10th goal of
The Wild outshot the Devils 13-9 in the third period, but
regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3.
Neither team scored in the overtime period. The Devils
won the game in the shootout.
